Prep Classes

Come and learn the style and choreography performed by the Zyia Active Jazz Dancers. At the end of each class, participants will work out and have an open Q & A session about tryouts and what to expect as a Zyia Active Jazz Dancer. You must pre-register to save your spot.

Auditions

Applications and Videos are due Thursday, May 23

Audition Application:

Please note that the first round of auditions is VIRTUAL and there are two steps required.

Step One: Registration

Please submit the following to dancerauditions@utahjazz.com:

  • Dancer application form - Click Here
  • Professional business resumé
  • Full body photo 5x7

Step Two: Video Submission

Once your registration is complete, you will receive an email with information on how to submit your first-round video. PLEASE MAKE SURE THE EMAIL LISTED ON YOUR APPLICATION IS LEGIBLE AND ACCURATE.

The video will need to include:

  • Technique combos
  • Tricks
  • One minute solo

Videos are due before May 23 at 6 P.M. Be aware that there will be no exceptions to this deadline, so please plan accordingly to allow enough time between your registration submission and the video deadline.

Dancers moving on to the next round will be notified by Thursday, May 30. Please watch for updates here and an email with additional information/choreography for Saturday, June 1.

Cuts will be made throughout the week of June 1-6

Auditions Week Schedule:

June 1, Saturday - 8 A.M. - 4 P.M.

June 3, Monday - 5 P.M. - 10 P.M.

June 4, Tuesday - 5 P.M. - 10 P.M.

June 5, Wednesday - 8 A.M. - 8 P.M.

June 6, Thursday - 9 A.M. - 2 P.M.

Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age by June 6, 2024. 
  • High school graduate

Attire:

  • Half-tops or sports bras. Tanks or t-shirts for men
  • Non-marking dance or athletic shoes
  • Performance-ready hair and make-up
  • Attire for interviews is business professional dress

What to expect as a member of the Utah Jazz dance team:

The 2024-25 Zyia Active Utah Jazz Dancers is a team that will perform at all Utah Jazz home games. Performances at select Salt Lake City Stars games will be required. You will also be required to perform at special appearances throughout the NBA season & off-season. The primary style of dance is hip hop and jazz with higher levels of technique required. Rehearsals will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and additional nights when necessary. Call time on game days is 2:45 P.M. THIS IS A MAJOR TIME COMMITMENT!

  • Mandatory Summer League: July 8, 9, 10
  • Mandatory Rookie Bootcamp: Aug. 1, 6, 8
  • Full team practices will begin Aug. 13. All practices in August are mandatory (Tuesday/Thursday)

FAQ's

Do the Jazz dancers get paid?

Yes, this is a paid position.

What can I do to be more prepared?

Attend the prep classes. Each prep class will have new material. Work out and properly fuel your body. You'll want to feel your best and be able to keep up with the choreography and workouts.

Will the program be the same as last year?

There is always some change from year to year.

Can I have another job while being a Utah Jazz dancer?

Yes, most dancers are students or have other jobs. You can schedule your appearances around your job or school, but must make arrangements with your employer to attend every practice and home game.

Do returning dancers have to audition again?

Yes.

Do dancers dance at away games?

No, just home games.

If I make the team, when do rehearsals start?

We start rehearsing in August and continue throughout the NBA season.

What will I be judged on?

Execution of choreography, athletic ability, poise, and work ethic.
